Music as a Metaphor for Leadership Success

Program Description

Specifically designed for virtual participation, this experiential program leverages the power of music to explore what it takes for leaders to be successful in today’s challenging new world.  Led by professional musicians, participants use found-object instruments from their own environment to harness the impact of experiential learning.  Using music as a metaphor, we draw powerful connections between success in the musical world and success in the professional world. 

Participants learn to create a piece of music together, applying skills like adaptivity, resilience, communication and focus.   We debrief each step along the way, exploring the insights gained from dynamically employing these leadership skills in this unique musical context.  By the end of the session participants have been challenged to play a piece of music in a very short time, and their success has produced a real feeling of learning and achievement - leaving everyone engaged, energized and connected!

Key Take-Aways

Participants will be able to immediately apply their refreshed perspective on the fundamentals of leadership.  Having applied many of these skills through experiential learning exercises, they will have a renewed sense of the importance of a fundamentals-based focus in exploring what it means to be a leader in today’s professional world.  Additionally, through their day to day interactions with colleagues and co-workers, attendees will be able to immediately apply their learnings in the areas of self-awareness and interpersonal intelligence. 

By using the perspective of music to explore the competencies of the field, participants will come away with a renewed appreciation of both the art and discipline of leadership.  Revisiting the fundamentals of the field in this way elevates the leadership practices of professionals across any industry. In summary, this session is experiential, engaging, unique, research-based and fun!

IMPORTANT! Pre-Program instructions:

1. Come ready with a found object instrument such as a pot, pan, box, etc (or an actual drum if you have one) that is large enough for you to fit your whole hand on.
2. Be ready for interaction and active participation!
3. Turn your sound and your video on. If we can’t see you and you can’t see us, the experience won’t work.
4. We strongly suggest a pair of over-the-ear headphones. This will help balance the sound of your instrument with that coming from your computer, and create a high quality musical experience.
5. Be prepared to be able to move your camera from showing your face to showing your hands.
6. Be prepared to both sit and stand

About our Speaker

Bill Scheidt offers a unique blend of expertise in business dynamics, passion for human connection, and a love for music. For him, Sewa Beats is a way of paying forward the many gifts that have come out of his time living, working and studying in Africa. His work is an expression of his commitment to making a difference in the world.

Under Bill’s directorship, Sewa Beats has delivered corporate training programs in 19 countries, 7 languages, and reached more than 300,000 participants around the world.  Sewa Beats’ clients include many Fortune 500 companies such as IBM, Coca-Cola, Hewlett Packard, BMW, and Cisco Systems. 

Bill first went to Africa when he was awarded a grant to study a herd of giraffe as part of an ecology and conservation research project he designed. It was then that he fell in love with Africa, its music, and its people. He learned Kiswahili, taught English at a local school, and began his studies of the drum. He later went on to become a close personal student of legendary master drummer Mamady Keita, and achieved the degree of Senior Instructor at the world’s first international academy of West African Drumming.

Today, Bill is based Winston Salem, NC – taking advantage of living between the coast and the mountains to pursue his love of outdoor adventure sports. When he’s not mountain biking or trail running, Bill can be found spending quiet time with his family.
